Now Anandwan is a world-renowned award winner co-operative village carved out of barren land where unity, peace and harmony reign supreme.
The struggle to give the leprosy afflicted a dignified life begins with the establishment of Anandwan, the headquarters of MSS, Warora.
The leprosy afflicted, led by Baba Amte
attempt to overcome
disease & disability to create
one of the most extraordinary villages in India.
Baba encourages self-sustaining agriculture & water
conservation to
develop a sense of self-sufficiency amongst
the
patients & to feed everyone in all MSS, Warora projects.
Anandwan starts a primary school for the visually impaired to bring the disabled into the mainstream & a college to bring higher education into rural India.
MSS, Warora starts a tribal development project
in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra
working with the Madia-Gond tribe.
Baba Amte launches a cycle rally throughout
the country to promote unity against separatist &
communal forces in a riot torn India.
The prestigious Damien Dutton & Ramon Magsaysay awards are awarded to Baba Amte for his extensive work.
Inspired by the extent of Baba’s work His Holiness
the Dalai Lama visits Anandwan. A message of
peace & human development is given to the world.
The Templeton Prize & Right Livelihood
Award
is awarded to Baba Amte.
Volunteers led by Dr. Vikas Amte undertake
various projects in Agriculture, Water Conservation,
Livelihood Generation and Education.
Eco-friendly and waste material is used to construct
buildings and dams. Afforestation initiatives
are taken across all MSS, Warora projects.
Anandwan begins its journey to become a SMART village.
Sustainable projects which can be replicated in rural India
with the help of technology are initiated.
Anandwan’s journey to become India’s first SMART village continues.
The journey from stones to milestones to
